More than 30,000 pounds of old tax returns, bills, bank records and papers were shredded with the help of KTVK-TV in Phoenix, Ariz. The station teamed up with the Arizona attorney general’s office for the “3 On Your Side Shred-a-Thon,” an event designed to help consumers protect themselves from identity theft. On-air promotion, including news stories and reminders not to throw sensitive documents in the trash, drew crowds to the free event. Cars lined up before the shred-a-thon officially kicked off. One viewer, Franks Peters, brought in documents dating back to 1962. "People were able to get rid of their old documents safely," said Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard. "It was a great event."
