WYCT-FM Awarded for Community Service at Service to America Awards

The National Association of Broadcasters Leadership Foundation awarded ADX Communication’s WYCT-FM Pensacola, Fla., the Service to Community Award for Radio – Medium Market at the 2019 Celebration of Service to America Awards Gala in Washington, D.C.

The award recognizes WYCT-FM’s dedication to supporting the Santa Rosa Kids’ House. Santa Rose Kids’ House offers on-site specialized sexual abuse therapy to help child victims and their families recover. The station raised nearly $15,000 for the non-profit during its inaugural Spring Jam, an all-ages event featuring popular country music acts.

WREG-TV Recognized at the Service to America Awards

Tribune Media’s WREG-TV Memphis, Tenn., received the Service to Community Award for Television – Medium Market at the NAB Leadership Foundation 2019 Service to America Awards Gala in Washington, D.C. WREG received the honor for their continued support of the LeBonheur Children’s Hospital through Go Jim Go!

To support the hospital’s mission to provide care to children in need, WREG meteorologist Jim Jagger bikes 333 miles through the community each fall. Along the way, he and his team collect donations raised by churches, schools and other community organizations. While Jim rides, WREG highlights the lifesaving work performed at LeBonheur. In 2018, the event raised $370,000. Since the inaugural ride, the station has donated $2.9 million.

WLEN-FM Recognized at the Service to America Awards for Supporting Veterans

WLEN-FM received the Service to Community Award for Radio – Small market in recognition of their commitment to help veterans experiencing homelessness in the community at the 2019 Celebration of Service to America Awards Gala in Washington, D.C.

Thirteen years ago, the staff at Lenawee Broadcasting Company’s WLEN-FM Adrian, Mich., learned of local veterans living in the nearby woods. In response, WLEN-FM created the Veterans Dire Needs Fund. Annually on Veterans Day, the station collects money for local vets and raises awareness for homeless veterans and their critical needs. This event has grown from $5,000 raised in the first year to more than $30,000 raised in 2018. More than $250,000 has been raised over the years to help support Lenawee County veterans with a goal of helping local veterans to live as proudly as they served.

WKMG-TV Receives Service to Community Award for Investigative Reporting

Graham Media Group’s WKMG-TV Orlando, Fla., received the Service to Community Award for Television – Large Market at the NAB Leadership Foundation 2019 Service to America Awards Gala in Washington, D.C. WKMG received the honor for a series of investigative reports featuring first responders diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

WKMG’s focused reporting helped expose the state’s failure to recognize PTSD as a medical injury and provide workers’ compensation to emergency responders who could not prove physical injury. After WKMG aired their initial report, more first responders were empowered to come forward and speak about their experiences. On March 27, 2018, Governor Rick Scott signed the Workers’ Compensation Benefits for First Responders Act into law. Governor Scott said WKMG’s reporting was instrumental in the passage and signing of the new law.

Beasley Media Group – Service to Community Award for Television

The National Association of Broadcasters Leadership Foundation (NABLF) honored Beasley Media Group with the Service to Community Award for Television – Ownership Group at the 2019 NABLF Celebration of Service to America Awards in Washington, D.C. The award recognized Beasley for the impact of Beasley Best Community of Caring (BBCC), which creates scripts for 30- and 60- second public service announcements and asks stations to air spots ten times per week.

The campaign is supported by corresponding social media posts, articles and blogs. Each market is also paired with a local group to work on issues that touch the community. In 2018, BBCC donated nearly 33,000 spots across 15 markets, while individual stations worked to serve and support their local communities.

Hearst Television, Inc. – Service to Community Award for Television

Hearst Television, Inc. received the Service to Community Award for Television - Ownership Group for their coverage of the 2018 midterm elections at the 2019 Celebration of Service to America Awards in Washington, D.C. Hearst’s commitment to covering issue-oriented stories as they broke and digging deeper into investigative pieces helped viewers make better informed decisions at the polls.

Across ten months, Hearst Television stations hosted 98 debates and aired 5,034 political stories, totaling to nearly 13,200 minutes of coverage. The 2018 midterm elections marked the highest voter turnout for a midterm election in more than a century.

WMMR-FM Philadelphia, PA – Service to Community Award for Radio – Major Market

Beasley Media Group-owned WMMR-FM Philadelphia received the Service to Community Award for Radio - Major Market at the NAB Leadership Foundation 2019 Service to America Awards Gala in Washington, D.C. for their dedication to ending food insecurity in the city. Started by Preston and Steve, WMMR’s top-rated morning hosts, the annual “Camp Out for Hunger” is the largest single-location food drive in America, generating millions of meals. Now in the 21st year of the event, the 2018 Preston and Steve Camp Out for Hunger collected food and cash donations totaling over two million meals for the hungry.

The award was presented at the 2019 Celebration of Service to America awards.

WCTV Receives Service to Community Award

In the wake of Hurricane Maria, a local Tallahassee couple started collecting relief supplies for the residents of their hometown Jayuya, P.R. Gray Television’s WCTV Tallahassee, Fla., covered the couple’s efforts and within days, several truckloads of relief supplies were collected and sent to Jayuya. To help further, a WCTV crew traveled to Jayuya to document how the donated materials helped Puerto Ricans recover from the devastation. The station also highlighted the continued struggles many were having getting money for housing repairs. Rather than waiting for the Federal Emergency Management Association to approve or deny financial aid, the station helped raise funds, equipment and materials to help provide new roofs for homes in Jayuya.

WCTV received the NAB Leadership Foundation’s Service to Community Award for Television – Small Market at the 2019 Service to America Awards Gala for their efforts.

WSOY-AM Awarded 2018 NAB Crystal Radio Award

WSOY-AM Decatur, Ill. was awarded the 2018 National Association of Broadcasters’ (NAB) Crystal Radio Award. Since 1987, the NAB Crystal Radio Awards have recognized radio stations for their outstanding year-round commitment to community service. WSOY-AM has only five employees and put in a total of 1,008 hours of volunteer time in 2017.
