Manship Stations’ ABC affiliate WBRZ-TV Baton Rouge stuffed four buses with nearly $40,000 worth of school supplies they collected during the 10th annual “Stuff the Bus” campaign, held July 12. The drive benefited many students and teachers, including those still recovering from the 2016 flood.

Raycom Media launched a national investigative unit, to be led by investigative reporter Lee Zurik from Fox affiliate WVUE-TV New Orleans. The unit will produce investigative reports focusing on the local impact of national issues. Raycom will tackle abuses in government spending, consumer protection, public safety, tax policy, job creation, health care, infrastructure and immigration. “We are going to make a difference in our communities,” Zurik said. “We will be taking subjects outside of the ‘beltway of Washington’ mentality of the national news networks and answering the viewers’ biggest concern: how does this affect me and my family here in Cleveland, Baton Rouge, Cape Girardeau or Charleston?”




WVUE Exposes Fishing Entitlement Program (WVUE)

Raycom’s Fox affiliate WVUE New Orleans investigated fishermen who make millions through an entitlement program in a five-part investigation titled “Hooked Up.” Recreational and commercial fishing is worth billions in Louisiana, but 50 businesses and fishermen control 81 percent of the commercial red snapper allocation. They can make a total of $23 million every year, many without actually fishing.

Manship Stations’ ABC affiliate WBRZ Baton Rouge staffers Chris Nakamoto, Joe McCoy III and Michael Shingleton won a regional Emmy in the “Politics and Government” category for its story “Reporters’ Unlawful Arrest.” While investigating possible fraudulent activity in the Town of White Castle, Nakamoto was unlawfully arrested and charged (later dropped). Shingleton continued coverage after his arrest. “This award shows Chris Nakamoto’s dedication to holding the powerful accountable,” Shingleton said. “WBRZ will continue to expose elected officials breaking rules and unlawfully spending taxpayer money.”

As historic flooding in Louisiana impacted at least 40,000 homes and claimed the lives of at least 13 people, local radio and television broadcasters provided remarkable lifeline news coverage around the clock. While other communications networks have failed, Louisiana’s broadcasters stayed on the air, even as many of them have lost their homes while reporting stories from the flooding. An example of broadcasters’ incredible coverage include this video from Raycom’s CBS affiliate WAFB of a group of men rescuing a drowning woman and her dog from a sinking car. The video has drawn tens of millions of views online and shed much-needed light on the plight of Louisianans.

Alpha Media stations provided extensive coverage of the floods and encouraged listeners to donate to the American Red Cross. Portland Operations Manager Bruce Collins said, “We are honored and privileged as a media company to participate in helping the thousands of people in the Baton Rouge area who suffered from this catastrophic flooding event.” Biloxi, Miss. stations asked listeners and local businesses to donate relief supplies at the Gulfport City Hall or local fire station from August 15-16. Three semi-trucks were filled, far exceeding the goal of one truck. “Through Alpha’s outreach and radio networks, we were able to engage so many more people and had an abundance of volunteers and donations streaming in,” said City of Gulfport Public Information Officer Chris Vignes. “Some of the most memorable moments were listeners showing up with their own stories and donations.”

According to the American Red Cross, the flood that devastated parts of Louisiana in August was the worst disaster since Hurricane Sandy four years ago. At least 13 lives were claimed and damage estimates are as high as $30 million. Radio Ink spoke with Guaranty Media General Manager Gordy Rush about the flood and how the company’s four stations in Baton Rouge covered the weather and relief efforts. Rush said, “Our team was relentless. James Gilmore, our country midday talent, who is also fighting stage 4 kidney cancer, produced 12 hours of Talk 107.3 programming over the weekend, then went to help another employee clean out his house after the flood water went down.”

The WBRZ.com team also reunited people who were separated from family members. “WBRZ’s entire organization answered the bell round after round and remains standing Louisiana Strong. Hearst Television’s NBC affiliate WDSU-TV New Orleans held a telethon on Wednesday, August 17 to raise funds and supplies for the Second Harvest Food Bank after historic flooding tore through the viewing area. Monetary donations from the telethon helped provide clean drinking water, food and cleaning supplies. More than $100,000 was raised.

Raycom’s Fox affiliate WVUE New Orleans has earned, for the sixth consecutive year, the prestigious National Edward R. Murrow awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA). WVUE won the “News Series” category for Reporter Lee Zurik’s “Swiped: Financial Mismanagement.” Zurik exposed a Louisiana retirement system executive director who spent recklessly on personal trips and meals while squandering nearly $150 million in retiree benefits. The series led to the executive director’s resignation and sweeping institutional changes. WVUE was also recognized in the “Use of Video” category for the weekly “Heart of Louisiana” series produced by Dave McNamara. The winning story featured a nature photographer, the birds at Grand Isle and a behind the scenes look at a Cajun bakery.

Raycom’s Fox affiliate WVUE New Orleans raised $1.2 million in ticket sales for its St. Jude Dream Home giveaway. The campaign launched in March with a phone bank held during the morning newscast. On June 29, WVUE held a drawing to pick the winner and hosted a telethon. WVUE has been named the St. Jude Television Station of the Year.

Townsquare Media, Inc. raised $1.4 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital during the group’s third national Country Cares radiothon, March 3-4. Townsquare stations in 16 markets, including Albany, NY; Owensboro, Kentucky; Lafayette, Louisiana; and Tyler, Texas, participated to help St. Jude continue their life saving treatments. TEGNA’s CBS affiliate WWL-TV New Orleans helped raise $239,000 for the United Way following a February 24 tornado. WWL created a PSA on how to donate, which aired in almost all newscasts for two weeks. “Our neighbors have always supported us, and we in turn want to make sure we’re there for them,” said WWL General Manager Todd Smith. “It’s a promise we make every day, and it’s a part of what makes South Louisiana feel like a family.”

Nexstar recently added over two dozen news personnel and purchased new weather technology and traffic systems. The expanded team of journalists with unique ties to Louisiana will provide viewers with more relevant local news content. The new full-day local news schedule begins April 4. KLAF will air local news on weekdays from 5 - 7 a.m. and at 5, 6 and 10 p.m.; plus Saturdays at 6 and 10 p.m. and Sundays at 5 and 10 p.m. KADN will air newscasts weekdays at 9 p.m.

KNOE-TV Monroe, LA Raised $172,000 for Flood Relief (KNOE-TV)

Gray’s CBS affiliate KNOE-TV Monroe, LA provided extensive coverage for flood relief, after 24 inches of rain fell the week of March 7. Floods forced thousands of people to evacuate and closed schools, roads and bridges. The KNOE staff tirelessly covered the flooding. One news crew stayed on-air in wet clothes after their boat capsized. “We were completely submerged in flood water. In a matter of minutes, we went from covering the story to being a part of it,” said reporter Nicole Cross “But, I count it all joy – just a small price to pay to expose what the people here and in so many other parts of the ArkLaMiss are facing.”

Proceeds from the tickets, which sold for $100 each, raised $821,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Giveaways included a new car worth $50,000 and a new 3,500 square foot home built by Alvarez Construction, valued at $500,000. The event featured interviews with St. Jude patients and families, who never receive a bill for treatment.

Manship Stations’ ABC affiliate WBRZ Baton Rouge, La. raised more than $111,000 to distribute 7,500 coats to children in 171 schools. Since its inception 26 years ago, Pat’s Coats for Kids has distributed more than 200,000 winter coats to local children in need.

Manship Station’s ABC affiliate WBRZ Baton Rouge, La., held its 30th annual Feed-A-Family food drive in October. Volunteers delivered the donations to a local food bank, where they were stored before distribution. On Oct. 24, Feed-A-Family Friday, the station raised over $25,000 and almost 69,000 pounds of food. This will provide 186,000 meals. WBRZ also held its Pat’s Coats for Kids Coat Drive in November. So far, WBRZ raised more than $33,000.

Louisiana Media Company’s FOX affiliate WVUE-TV New Orleans was honored for its investigative series, in partnership with The Times-Picayune, that uncovered illegal campaign finance practices, unethical activities and a systematic lack of campaign regulation enforcement. WVUE-TV reporters spent thousands of hours diligently digging through campaign filings to uncover the abuse. In the end, the "Louisiana Purchased" series found one-third of the $209 million in statewide campaigns from 2009 to 2012 came from less than 1 percent of donors.

Manship Stations’ ABC affiliate WBRZ-TV Baton Rouge hosted the seventh annual "Stuff the Bus School Supply Drive," encouraging viewers to help the station completely fill one East Baton Rouge Parish school bus and one Ascension Parish school bus with supplies for students in need. The drive exceeded expectations. WBRZ-TV raised nearly $73,000 worth of school supplies and stuffed a total of six buses with supplies.

Manship Stations-owned ABC affiliate WBRZ-TV Baton Rouge, La., is holding the 17th annual Fill-a-Prescription for the Needy campaign from March 5 – April 5 to raise money to purchase the prescription medication for Baton Rouge’s St. Vincent de Paul Community Pharmacy. WBRZ-TV has set up 250 bins in 214 locations across the region to collect donations. Additionally, the stations will co-host three benefit lunches to raise funds. Last year, the campaign filled more than 38,000 prescription bottles for a total value of more than $3.3 million.




WDSU-TV New Orleans Raises $55,000 During Two-Night Campaign (WDSU-TV)

Hearst-owned WDSU-TV New Orleans partnered with the Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana for "Help For Oklahoma," a two-night, four-hour phone bank. For two nights, WDSU-TV committed all of its local commercial breaks between 6 and 8 p.m. to run on-air appeals for donations, and ran a continuous on-screen ticker with the phone number during regular programming. In total, the campaign raised $55,000 for vicitims of the Oklahoma tornadoes.




WBRZ-TV Raises $100,000 for Big Buddy Program (WBRZ-TV)

Inspired by the hit show "Dancing with the Stars," WBRZ-TV in Baton Rouge, La., spearheaded a local version to raise money for the Big Buddy Program, a non-profit organization that provides mentoring and programming geared toward academic success for disadvantaged youth. By the end of the last tango, more than $100,000 had been raised to help thousands of children in the community. WBRZ anchor Sylvia Weatherspoon co-hosted the show, and other area "celebrities," including Chief Forecaster Pat Shingleton, "2une-In" co-anchor Whitney Vann, Baton Rouge Mayor-President Kip Holden and Glen "Big Baby" Davis from the LSU basketball team, hit the dance floor. Each performer devoted hours of practice to prepare for the event with their partners, who were professional dancers from local dance studios. The night of the big event, a crowd of 1,500 gathered to watch. In promotion of the fundraiser, WBRZ aired 30-second promotional spots weeks in advance, the news department covered rehearsals during various newscasts, Big Buddy Executive Director Gay Mack appeared on the morning show and the "2une-In" staff gave away tickets on-air to generate enthusiasm. With the funds raised, Big Buddy was able to continue an after-school program for at-risk youth.




KTBS-TV Airs Prostrate Cancer PSA (KTBS-TV)

It was a lifesaving event. Free prostate cancer screenings, brought to the community by KTBS-TV in Shreveport, La., in partnership with Regional Urology, helped several men detect the disease early, when it is most treatable. The station set up a mobile screening unit at its KTBS 3 Boat and Sport Show, making it a convenient stop for the tens of thousands of people the event attracts. To help viewers tune into the facts about prostate cancer and the opportunity to be screened, the station produced public service announcements (PSAs) featuring the fire chief, local doctors and other high-profile people in the community. In addition, the station aired a series of news stories spotlighting survivors and a half-hour special about prostate cancer. During the day-and-a-half event, 550 men were screened. "We know that several men were diagnosed with prostate cancer, and some were found just in time, before it spread," said Jan Elkins, who heads up community affairs for KTBS. After the event, the station ran a three-month PSA campaign to continue to raise awareness, potentially saving even more lives.




Raycom Station Hosts Baton Rouge Mayoral Debate (WAFB-TV)

National Communications-owned Fox affiliate KVHP-TV and the local CW Lake Charles, La., hosted a Pink Celebration Breast Cancer Awareness Breakfast benefitting the Ethel Precht Hope Breast Cancer Organization. KVHP-TV and the Lake Charles CW raised nearly $2,500 for the foundation. KVHP-TV’s "On the Air" host Heather Leyoub was the featured emcee of the morning. The breakfast featured breast cancer survivor testimonials as well as two keynote speakers. Lake Charles Mayor Randy Roach awarded Ethel and KVHP-TV with a Certificate of Proclamation affirming October 8 as Breast Cancer Awareness Day.




KXKC-FM Staff Walk to End Sexual Assault (KXKC-FM)

Ray Robicheaux, his brother Tyler Robicheaux and Promotion Director Daniel Hawkes of Citadel Broadcasting’s KXKC-FM Lafayette, La., recently participated in the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes March for rape prevention. The mission of the walk is to create a unique and powerful public experience that educates individuals and communities about the causes of sexualized violence and provides prevention and remediation strategies. KXKC-FM promoted the event by inviting listeners to vote for the dress Ray would wear to the walk. Listeners were encouraged to join Ray and the stations’ team to support the campaign to end sexual assault.




KXKC-FM Challenges Listeners to Donate 99 Bikes for Lafayette’s Kids (KXKC-FM)

Citadel-owned KXKC-FM Lafayette, La., held its annual Toys for Tots holiday drive last month, focusing the station’s efforts on collecting one of the most requested items, bikes. KXKC-FM’s morning team Ray Robicheaux and Jeni Lane set out to collect 99 bikes within one week. If they were unable to collect their goal, Robicheaux agreed to ride 99 miles on his own bike. Luckily for Robicheaux, the goal was reached. "It’s the most rewarding event I’ve been part of, just to think that gifts that were out of reach in the past [were] delivered to children in our community; it’s truly heart warming," said Robicheaux.




Nexstar’s KTVE-TV and KARD-TV Assists 12 Louisiana Parishes with Holiday Drive (KTVE-TV)

Nexstar Broadcasting Group’s KTVE-TV and KARD-TV Monroe, La./El Dorado, Ark., held its 10th annual "Christmas Cheer Food Drive" in which 48 local schools competed to beat hunger by collecting canned food. The effort raised 78,028 pounds of food. All items helped to feed residents in the 12 northeast Louisiana parishes.




WWL-AM/FM Acts of Lifeline During Hurricane Gustav (WWL-AM/FM)

In the face of Hurricane Gustav, which many feared would be worse than Hurricane Katrina, veteran broadcasters at WWL-AM/FM in New Orleans, La., stood equipped and ready to provide a lifeline of critical information to listeners. Although the studio endured winds greater than 50 mph, WWL never lost power thanks to emergency transmitter generators put in service prior to any power outages. Throughout the storm, the station not only broadcast from its studio, but also ran four remote broadcast locations. Station talent was placed at emergency operations centers in several parishes, providing local authorities a direct venue to communicate with their communities. These remote broadcast locations had real-life impact. For example, when a private levee in Braithwaite was threatened, WWL talk radio host John “Spud” McConnell made an on-air plea that rallied help and sandbags from nearby residents and businesses. The station remained a steady stream of accurate and potentially lifesaving information before, during and after the storm.




WDSU-TV Acts as Lifeline During Hurricane Katrina (WDSU-TV)

When the devastation of Hurricane Katrina shook the residents of Louisiana, WDSU-TV in New Orleans, La., took serious measures to ensure their community was as prepared as possible for future storms. When Hurricane Gustav made its way to the Gulf Coast, the station knew what to do. In preparation for the storm and in its aftermath, the station went commercial free with their coverage. President and General Manager, Joel Vilmenay, made the call because he still has staff working for him who has been there since Katrina hit three years ago and they have memories still fresh in their minds. One of the decisions WDSU made post Katrina was to permanently establish a bureau in Baton Rouge which acts as a secondary position for the station if it is needed. Still, as a precaution, the station rebuilt its transmitter platform at 27 feet above sea level to protect it from flood damage, equipped with a generator and fuel to run it for just over two weeks without the help of outside power. They also provided their staff with satellite phones, text-capable cell phones, spare tires, first-aid kits, food and water.




WAFB-TV Supports Local Zoo (WAFB-TV)

A longtime friend of the area zoo, WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge, La., is helping raise money for the Elephant Oasis Project. Decades ago, in what has become celebrated local history, WAFB’s on-air personality Buckskin Bill held a "Penny Drive" to bring the Baton Rouge Zoo its first elephant. The wildly successful drive raised enough money for two baby elephants, appropriately named Penny and Penny Too. The zoo, which receives nearly one-quarter of a million visitors each year, is now in need of an updated elephant education area. WAFB’s fundraising efforts for this project have been extensive, including the broadcast of news stories, promotional spots and the "WAFB Elephant Oasis Special," a live 90-minute broadcast that gave local schools, organizations and businesses the opportunity to make donations to the zoo on air. In addition to asking corporations for monetary contributions, the station created a five-minute DVD on how to raise money for the project and mailed it with a cover letter to all local area schools. WAFB also created an "Elephant Oasis" page on the station Web site. To date, more than $68,000 has been raised toward the final goal of $175,000, and WAFB continues its on-and off-air efforts to make the Elephant Oasis a reality.




WWL-TV Donates $225,000 in Airtime (WWL-TV)

For the 20th year, WWL-TV in New Orleans, La., continued its commitment to the New Orleans City Park Celebration in the Oaks. Backed by airtime worth $225,000, the annual fundraiser had a record year, attracting 70,000 visitors and bringing in $300,000 to help revitalize the landmark, which was damaged in Hurricane Katrina. The station ran promotional announcements for the event and created public service announcements (PSAs) to encourage viewer donations. In a related effort focused on rebuilding the great city of New Orleans, the station aired a four-hour remembrance of the storm. In tandem with the Hurricane Katrina Special, WWL created a series of PSAs that focus on the still present effects of the storm, including spots that raised money to repair community areas and announcements aimed at fighting homelessness and hunger.




WGNO-TV Launches "Wheel of Justice" and "Crime Tracker" (WGNO-TV)

Within a week of WGNO-TV, New Orleans, La., launching "Wheel of Justice" and "Crime Tracker," two new segments focused on bringing the community together to fight the rising tide of crime in the area, two featured suspects were behind bars. The station launched both initiatives to take an active role in making the city safer. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, the police chief comes into the studio and spins the "Wheel of Justice" for the 10 p.m. newscast. The wheel features the names and photos of four wanted criminals, and details are given about the suspect the wheel lands on. This information is also turned into a 10-second spot that plays regularly. Viewers are asked to call the station, the police or Crime Stoppers with any information. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the "Crime Tracker" segment maps where crimes and acts of violence have been committed, calling residents’ attention to safety issues within neighborhoods across the region. As part of "Crime Tracker," the station also has called upon an experienced local bounty hunter to assist in the investigation of crimes and capture of suspects. "We recognize that the people of metro New Orleans want more done (to battle crime)," said Larry Delia, vice president and general manager of Tribune Television New Orleans. "We’re taking the initiative to join the community and make change happen that will benefit all of us."




KWCL-FM Airs Half-Hour Public Affairs Special (KWCL-FM)

Co-host mother and daughter team Irene Robinson and Kelley Lovell of KWCL-FM in Oak Grove, La., did their part to help Louisiana voters go to the polls informed during the 2007 local elections. Their half-hour daily public affairs show, "Mighty Mess," hosted local candidates from judges to state representatives and provided them free airtime to address the public. The show also covered how to register to vote and early voting dates, and its hosts encouraged listeners to learn the issues and show up at the polls. The station plans to provide similar voter education outreach in upcoming elections. "We are small, but we are loud," said Robinson of KWCL, which is staffed by five people and located in a town with a population just more than 2,000.




KFLY-TV Collects 200 Tons of Food, $50,000 (KFLY-TV)

For 21 years, KFLY-TV in Lafayette, La., and its viewers have shown their dedication to feeding the hungry in surrounding Acadiana. The station’s "TV10 Foodnet Food for Families" drive brought in 200 tons of food and $50,000 in cash donations in 2007. On the day of the drive, the station broadcast live during all on-air shows, as hundreds of volunteers worked at 21 drop sites gathering donations of food, personal hygiene products and baby items. KFLY news crews visited all 21 locations to conduct interviews and shoot news packages with staff and volunteers. At the Cajundoame, which acts as the main Lafayette donation drop, community members lined up in the parking lot, where cars, school buses, women’s clubs, 4-H and even the local Harley-Davidson group donated "drive through" style. The giving started with the 5 a.m. newscast and did not end until the 10 p.m. newscast was over. The drive has become a part of the community’s fabric, with participants returning year after year. Store shelves were emptied because of their generosity. "At the end of the day you are exhausted and full of love," said Station Manager Maria Placer. "It is amazing what can be done in one day."
